LA on the Move
Across Los Angeles, people and wildlife travel through shared landscapes, following paths that intersect and overlap. Metro is committed to creating environments where all species can flourish by reducing car dependence through public transit, planting native and drought-resilient vegetation, protecting nesting areas, and keeping paths open for animal movement.
LA on the Move brings attention to the region’s remarkable biodiversity and the role urban species play in maintaining balance. This temporary exhibition in the Union Station Waiting Room Gallery spotlights five familiar inhabitants—the coyote, mountain lion, red-tailed hawk, monarch butterfly, and California kingsnake—as they navigate neighborhoods in search of food, shelter, and safety.
Using data visualization—a practice of transforming information into visual form—the presentation invites visitors to recognize the connections between human choices and ecological wellbeing. From riding transit to selecting pollinator-friendly plants, each action contributes to healthier communities for both people and animals.
Developed by Metro Art with ArtCenter College of Design and the artist team Data Vandals — an art team that presents data in captivating ways — the temporary exhibition combines ecological data from the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy with imaginative student projects envisioning more sustainable futures. Together, the work demonstrates how thoughtful design and planning support coexistence across the region.
This project is part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide, a Getty initiative exploring intersections of creativity and scientific inquiry.
